   ¿¡º£¼Ò ±³È¸ÀÇ °ÅÁþ±³»çµéÀº, °áÈ¥°ú ¾î¶² À½½ÄÀ» ±ÝÇÔÀ¸·Î½á °æ°ÇÇØÁø´Ù°í ¹Ï¾ú½À´Ï´Ù.    Ã¹Â°·Î, ¿îµ¿¼±¼öó·³ ÈÆ·ÃÇØ¾ß ÇÑ´Ù´Â °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ÁÁÀº ¿îµ¿¼±¼ö°¡ µÇ·Á¸é ¼º½ÇÇÑ ÈÆ·ÃÀ» ¸¶´ÙÇÏÁö ¾Ê¾Æ¾ß ÇÏ´Â °Íó·³, ±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ ÁÁÀº ÀϲÛÀÌ µÇ·Á¸é ¼º½ÇÇÑ ½Å¾Ó»ýȰÀ» ÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

   6If you put these instructions before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the
+*sound teaching that you have followed. 7Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives' tales. Train yourself in godliness, 8for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. 10For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.


Story

   In the first Chronicles chapter 22 David leaves a will to his son, Solomon:

7..."My son, I had planned to build a house to the name of the Lord my God. 8But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, "You have shed much blood and have waged great wars; you shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed so much blood in my sight on the earth......11Now, my son, the Lord be with you, so that you may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he has spoken concerning you. 12Only, may the Lord grant you discretion and understanding, so that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13Then you will prosper if you are careful to observe the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed.......

   17David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon......

   David was the greatest king in the Israelite history. Politically he was the king who extended the territory to the utmost. Religiously he was the king most cherished by God and his people. But he was not a man of blamelessness. In Psalms 32 Paul confesses:

1Happy are those whose
transgression is forgiven,
 whose sin is covered.
2Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity,
 and in whose spirit there is no deceit.


   When he committed Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, Nathan, a country prophet, rebuked him. And he regarded that rebuke as God's and repented immediately. When he revealed his sin before God's presence, God covered his sin and loved him so more that Jesus Christ the Son of God was to born in his blood.

   Nevertheless, God did not allow him to construct the Temple because he shed much blood. David accepted God's will and is leaving a will to his beloved son Solomon that he has to build up the house of God and to keep the law of the Lord, so that he may be greater and more blessed king than ever before. He knew he was not a good king but wanted his son to be better.


Exposition

   In our text we find a very similar context. Paul in prison is writing to the young Timothy sent to the Ephesian Church. In the first Timothy 1:2 he regards Timothy as his own son. He is writing to him just as David is leaving a will to Solomon.

   In v 6 Paul begins with this: "If you put these instructions before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching that you have followed." "Be a good servant of Christ Jesus" is the central theme of this letter.

   It is noteworthy that Paul writes not simply "Be a good servant" but "Be a good servant of Christ Jesus." Important in Christian journey is, of course, what quality you have as a servant. But more important is whose servant you are.

   How then can we be good servants of Christ? The answer suggested by Paul is twofold: first, to "put these instructions before the brothers and sisters" and second, to "train ourselves on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching."

   First, to be good servants of Christ you need to "put these instructions before the brothers and sisters." "These instructions" here refer against to the demonic teachings of false teachers who insisted to forbid marriage and some food.

   What then was the false teachers' problem? It was that their consciences were seared and desensitized to think reality as such honestly and fairly. In that case reason was serving heart which was fascinated by the ethos at their age such as Stoicism and Gnosticism. Reason was used for rationalizing and vindicating the desire and determination of heart.

   But the human reason as created in nature by God has the capacity to judge critically if the appetite and drive of heart is fitting to the divine teaching of the Bible. It is called a conscience.

   A human being is an existence of interpretation. If not, there could not have risen and fallen heresies in the world. The word of God is given the same to each of us. But its interpretation differs from person to person. That is the evidence why each one of us desperately requires an interpretation of any event or phenomenon or word.

   The problem of the Ephesian teachers is that their heart was prior and superior to the will of God in interpreting the Bible and failed to accept and follow it.

   What then is the will of God in "these instructions" of v 6? It is to enjoy the free gifts of God because God created the whole creatures so that our bodies and souls, sexualities and food are good in nature and should be enjoyed.

   Who then are the good servants and the bad servants in Christ? The good servants are those who discern the will of God from the pull of their heart. The bad servants are those who distorts the word of God according to the drive of their heart charmed by their ethos. For this reason in his Epistle to the Romans 12:1-2 Paul the apostle testifies:

1I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and perfect.

   The worship God really wants to accept is your life on the whole. In so doing you need discern the will of God from your heart tainted by the ethos of your age, accept it, and follow it.

   What then is the ethos of our age? It is characterized by materialism and consequentialism both of whose mother is utilitarianism. Utilitarianism means, "If you made the majority happy, you did good." The government of our democracy is based upon this. The utilitarian tendencies are so pervasive to our culture of accepting or rejecting persons by credits or exams or recommendations that require visible consequences according which you judge, "This is a good guy, that is a bad guy; this is a winner and that is a loser." But the Lord sees things different.

   Two thousand years ago the Jews believed the good guys were those who prayed three times a day, fasted twice a week, gave God every tenth of their properties and the poor the charities. But Jesus said, "You cannot tell by the apparent behaviors who is really good or bad. God regards as more important the inner motivation, intention, and purpose of souls."

   There are a few who works for God and neigbors without revealing the good they are doing. Are they real good servants? It is both right and wrong. In the sense that they have good motivation, intention, and purpose they must be good servants. But to be a good servant of Christ you need more than that, namely, "mercy and forgiveness."

   In Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus told us that human beings are fast to ask God of forgiveness and too slow to forgive others. The ratio of what we are forgiven and what we must forgive is ten thousand talents to 100 denarius, arithmetically five million to one. Jesus clearly said, "So my heavenly Fahter will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart" (Mt 18:35).

   You may be surprised if I confess I have a few person whom I have hated. I forgive them one day, but the hurt recurs again. My heart can forgive but cannot forget!

   I happened to watch "To Forgive or To Forget", a quite popular TV program, in which a runaway teenager was introduced. She went out, stole mother's money, lied to her so many times. But she decided to be confronted with her mother because she wanted to be forgiven. But her mother said, "I can forgive but cannot forget."

   Human beings cannot forgive because they cannot forget. In this respect the unforgiving servant in the parable is nothing but you and me. You and me can forgive only when empowered by God. When reminded of the past anger, hurt, hatred, I couldn't but pray. But I have always been unanswered. How can I be empowered by you and fee to forgive, my Lord?

   For a recent few days I have had toothache. I didn't know why, just suffered. And yet I found it was because of a new growing wisdom tooth. In Korean version it is called love tooth. But I felt nothing but pain. I couldn't find any love or wisdom at there. Have my and your ancestors lied to us?

   I was pondering deeply and deeply. And I realized I have been given love and wisdom from God for thirty and something years. Pain was real to me. It is an obvious reality but not the whole. Much greater, more precious, much larger parts of realities has always been with and for me. Compared with those, pain was a tiny small part of reality as such. At last I could give gratitude and glory to God and proclaim the complete forgiveness to those whom I couldn't forgive so far.

   The way to be a good servant of Christ Jesus is to discern the will of God, to accept and follow it; to do good with pure motivation, intention, and purpose; to be merciful and forgive others as God has done to us.

   This is the 19th anniversary of our church. God has given this church among us. What would you like to give him back? Jesus Christ our Lord wants not many members but at least a disciple of him. He wants from you discipleship, obeying and following life on the whole. What would you like to give him back in this anniversary?
