They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." 6He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. 9When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." 11So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." 17He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me." Story When I was pastoring in Uljin province, Korea, I went to fishing vacation with my fellow pastors. Even though we could fish at Uljin where fish were abundant, we went to Choongju Dam to catch big fish. We were fully equipped and ready to roll up our fishing rod. Through day and night we couldn't grasp even bite. Our fishing trip was the absolute failure. Exposition Our text begins with this, 1After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. 2Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. 3Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Here is written a failure. It is not simply a failure of fishing but of being a disciple. When Jesus spoke he would be crucified, Peter boldly said, "Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you" (Mk 14:31). He really loved Jesus. When Jesus was arrested, Peter put his hand on his sword, and cut off the ear of the slave sent by the high priest (Mt 26:51). He was brave enough to fight for Jesus. When Jesus was sent to the courtroom, Peter went there. He was faithful while other disciples scattered. But when recognized by those who were outside in the courtyard, Peter denied Jesus and even cursed. Can you understand this? Even Peter might not have understood. Other disciples and we, either. But Jesus knew. He knew that with human love, human bravery, human fidelity, nobody can bear one's own cross. So he predicted, "Truly I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times" (Mt 26:34). Peter failed in fishing. That failure followed after his failure as a disciple. At that very moment Jesus came to him. John depicts that moment, 4Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus appeared to the disciples who failed and taught them to catch a number of fish. When they followed his word, they could succeed. Jesus stands in amidst of our failure. This is the good news. When making a great success, John reminded the former success similar to this. When they met Jesus for the first time, they made the same success. After that experience they became the disciples to catch people rather than fish (Lk 5). In this respect this episode story was not intended to reveal the miraculous work in fishing but the call to true discipleship. When John said, "It's the Lord." Peter put on some clothes and jumped into the sea. He had to swim to the land. Other disciples rowed and got off the boat. John continues to state, 9When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. When encountering the disciples, Jesus never asked, "Why did you go away from me? Why did you deny me? Why did you betray me?" But he made a charcoal fire and warm breakfast. We can read here the caring love of Jesus for his disciples. In addition that he ate food with them implies that the Resurrection is the resurrection of body and spirit. Then, what has the resurrection to do with discipleship? John writes, 15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." 17He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me." Jesus' threefold questions are in contrast to Peter's threefold denial. At first he asked, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" What would be "these?" That may be secular success as in fishing or his friends who were with him even in his failure time or both of them. This love is love by and after comparison. Most of our love fall into this category. When we say, "I love you," it means, "I love you because you favor me than others. I love you because you are more beautiful than others. I love you because you do better to me than others." Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love me more than any other things or ones dearest to you?" He answered, "Yes, I do." Secondly Jesus asked, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" In this question comparison is removed. Why do you love your children? Why do you love your parents? Is it because they are of good personality, successful, famous, beautiful? Those may be what you think them so proud but not the reason why you love them. You love your children or parents prior to those reasons. You love them without. Likewise Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love me without?" He answered again, "Yes, I do." Finally Jesus asked, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" This apparently looks the same as the second question. But the verb, love, in Greek is different. The first two loves are agape ( ) while the third one filia ( ). Filia means passionate love to die for the beloved. Jesus asked Peter, "Can you die for me?" He said, "Yes, I do." Did Jesus not know that Peter loved him? Of course, not. He knew it. He knew everything as Peter said. Then, why did Jesus ask Peter with the same question three times? In revenge of his threefold denial? John in v 17 describes that when Jesus asked the same question three times, Peter felt hurt. Why did Jesus asked the same question three times? Cause he wanted to commission Peter to do what he had worked on the earth. After each Peter's reply, Jesus commanded him to shepherd, feed the lambs. By what? Just as a shepherd should feed sheep with grass and water, a disciple must feed souls with the word of God. Do you think it so difficult to feed people with the word of God? Jesus' hidden answer is 'yes,' considering the following prediction in v 18, "Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." In v 19 John comments the meaning of this prediction, "He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God." Then, we can infer the reason why Jesus hurt Peter with the threefold same question. It is because he wanted to make Peter understand discipleship requires sacrifice. Why did Jesus came to the disciples who went away, denied, and betrayed? Did he have no other choice but them? Our Lord never deserts those whom he'd ever chosen. Deserter is not him but us. He uses the undeserved, unqualified, unworthy alone. When Moses was intelligent, brave, and willing to rescue his people, God did not use him. He had to shepherd for 40 years in the Midian wilderness. But when he was old, weak, and unwilling, God used him for the exodus. You must remember those who know their undeservedness, unqualifiedness, unworthiness alone can deny themselves, bear their own cross, and follow Jesus to death. When you realize this grace and obey his re-calling, the power of the cross and the Resurrection comes into you. |
