The First Heart, Zeal, Improvement and Persistence
Our heart is like a garden; so we need to cultivate it well. In order to cultivate the garden of our heart well, we must know the importance of our heart. The Bible says, ¡°Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.¡± (Pr 4:23) In the Common Revised Translation, "everything" is translated as "the fountain of bliss." In the Korean Living Bible, it is translated as ¡°the spring of life¡±. The heart is the source of life, the fountain of bliss, and the spring of life. Therefore, we must guard our hearts well. We must rule our hearts well (Pr 16:32). We should cultivate our hearts well like gardens.
First, we should always cultivate our hearts to return to the first heart we had. Nothing is as important as the first heart. The first heart is the heart we had in the beginning. The first heart is a humble heart. The first heart is a heart that is simple, pure, and fresh. The first heart is a heart that wants to learn humbly from anyone. The world will be beautiful if all of us can keep the first heart. Many problems arise because our hearts change as we fail to keep our first heart. Humans are evil in nature, so they become prideful when things go well. So they abandon the first heart and go off track. Going off track is really dangerous. When a train goes off its tracks and derails, it cannot reach its destination. The train is destroyed, and the lives of the people on the train is in risk. The first heart is a heart to stay focused on a mission without derailing. It is the heart to steadily walk the path of your mission without derailing.
Second, embrace zeal. Zeal is enthusiasm. Paul says, "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.¡± (Ro 12:11) God accomplishes things through zeal. "The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this." (Isa 37:32; 2Ki 19:31) God hates laziness. In the parable of the talents, Jesus speaks of a man who received one talent as being "a wicked and lazy servant." (Mt 25:26) Jesus said that it was evil not to do one¡¯s best in what he was entrusted with. Enthusiasm is a powerful energy. Emerson said, "Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."
Paul emphasizes zeal, and, at the same time, encourages us to stay alert to ignorant zeal. He expresses pity toward the Jews who were zealous but did not follow right knowledge. ¡°¡¦ they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.¡± (Ro 10:2) Enthusiasm without right knowledge is dangerous. Therefore, we must strive to have zeal with right knowledge.
Third, grow continuously with the mindset of improving. Improvement means continuous learning and development. In order to grow continuously, we must live as lifelong learners. Excellent leaders live as lifelong learners. When you stop learning, you cannot improve anymore. Improvement means getting better in competence, level, or skill. When you no longer improve, you can no longer influence others. God wants us to grow to the fullness of Jesus (Eph 4:13).
Fourth, develop your muscles of persistence. Persistence is the strength to patiently finish your tasks. It is not always easy to finish what we have started. I am always mindful of discouragement and carelessness. Discouragement is the feeling you experience when you face a big obstacle in the process of achieving your goals. It is a painful feeling that comes when you experience failure and frustration. We must overcome disappointment. We should also be alert to carelessness. Carelessness is a heart that thinks too easily of the process in achieving a goal. Just as discouragement, carelessness is dangerous. There is no such thing as an easy task in our world. Carelessness is like a small hole that breaks down a big dam. It is carelessness that we ought to be always cautious of.
The legendary baseball player, Yogi Berra, started the saying, "It ain¡¯t over till it¡¯s over." These are my favorite words. He is a baseball player and has experienced an amazing reversal in the bottom of the ninth inning. For this reason, he says that you can create a drama of reversal and turn it around when you are not discouraged but persevere. On the other hand, he says that if you are discouraged and careless, you cannot bear good results. You can overcome your carelessness when you cultivate the first heart. You can overcome discouragement when you grow in persistence. Above all, we need strong persistence as we finish building our Vision Center. Persistent means backing-up power from behind. Please pray that God will give us persistence. Also, please gather your persistence. Thank you all for your precious service.
