The truth of resurrection that we must die to
live again (John 20:1-18)
Today`s Bible Reading presents us with one of
the accounts of the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his
crucifixion. Jesus has come to life again. After having died completely, he has
been resurrected. Why did Jesus, the Son of God, die? It was to give us life.
Having paid the price of our sins, he has freed us from sin and death to give us
an eternally blessed life. Jesus who suffered such death has risen again. And
his coming to life again was not for his personal resurrection only, but the
resurrection of many. He is the first fruit of the new history of resurrection
from death. Paul says in 1 Cor. 15: 20-21: "But in fact Christ has been raised
from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man
came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead." The
resurrection of Jesus Christ is the guarantee of the resurrection of all who
believe in him.
But Jesus` resurrection does not mean that all people
will automatically be resurrected and saved. For the resurrection of Christ to
become our own resurrection, what must we do? We must first participate in his
death on the cross. Paul says in Romans 6:5: "For if we have been united with
him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection
like his."
What does it mean to participate in the death of Jesus Christ
on the cross? It means the death of our old selves. It means the death of our
sinful bodies. We are thus freed from our slavery to sin. We heed again the
words of Paul: "We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that
the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be
enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin" (Romans
6:6-7).
It is in this sense that if we die with Jesus, we rise with him
from the dead. Paul continues: "Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that
we will also live with him" (6:8). To die with Christ is the way to new life,
and to reject death with Christ is to choose the path that precludes eternal
life. Jesus himself says: "Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life will keep it" (Luke 17:33).
To live again with
Christ is not to die again some day. It is to gain eternal life without death.
Again, we turn to the words of Paul: "We know that Christ, being raised from the
dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him" (Romans 6:9).
The resurrection granted to us, like the resurrection of Jesus Christ, grants us
eternal life.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is meaningful because it
is ensures our hope for eternal life once we have died to sin, but it is also
meaningful in another aspect. Not only do each and everyone of us gain eternal
life if we follow Christ in death, through our death, we bring to life many
others. Jesus` death brought about the salvation of many. Jesus taught his
disciples, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the
earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever
loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it
for eternal life" (John 12: 24-25), and his life was true to his words. The
truth of his words was proved by his resurrection. Thus Jesus Christ`s death
teaches us the two meanings of the truth that we must die to live. The first
truth is that we must die to sin, we must die to our bodies of sin, to be born
again into our new selves in God. The second truth is that the sacrificial death
of one person leads to the salvation of many others. Our Lord wishes us to die
in both senses. To die in both theses senses is the way for us to be renewed and
gain eternal life. This is what the resurrection of Christ teaches us and
vouches for us.
The Korean Church of today must be resurrected. It must
be born to new life. On the surface, the church appears active and vibrant, but
it is diseased through and through. Although it is diagnosed as unhealthy, the
church either does not heed, or does not seek to regain its health. It is like a
terminal cancer patient who is unaware of his condition. The unfortunate recent
occurrences in large churches and the conflict between church leaders has led
many to turn against the church and condemn it. The Korean church has never lost
its honor, or the confidence of the nation before to such a degree. Pastors who
have become blinded by material greed, greed for fame and power, have corrupted
the church and tarnished the glory of God. There is word that millions are spent
in church elections. The judicial branch of the church refuses to carry out its
duty. And yet, no one is willing to say "my fault." Everyone continues to fight,
only pointing fingers at others. Despite the harsh criticism from society, there
is no shame, no repentance. Once in awhile there is a call for a prayer meeting,
but it ends as a one-time event and no sincere effort is exerted for genuine
change. The Korean Church must die to sin and participate in the death of Christ
on the cross to come to life again, but nobody is ready to die.
It was
under these gloomy circumstances that last Thursday, the 21st, the local Seoul
council to which our church belongs, held its annual meeting. This problem was
on the agenda and was seriously debated. More than half of the entire meeting,
roughly three and a half hours, were devoted to this discussion. The decision
was unanimous. The Seoul Council decided to die. The Council admitted its
inability to prohibit the corrupted annual elections and repented its inability
to come up with effective countermeasures. Because the Council was entirely
convinced that without complete reform of such corruptions the Korean church
would have no place to stand in society, it decided to take responsibility and
effective action. The Seoul Council decided to take full responsibility for
having failed to lead properly and prevent corruption throughout the church
body, for its incompetence, the loss of faith and respect suffered by the church
within Korean society and the utter lack of credible leadership. As an act of
repentance and self-discipline, the Seoul Council decided not to be represented
in the annual national Presbyterian Council. There will be no general elections
in the spring. This is to root out corrupted elections. It was decided that the
Council needed to come up with a new method of elections that can render any
campaigning unnecessary. By accepting our responsibility and our failure in the
present crisis of the Korean church, we have decided to forfeit our
representation as the leading Council within the general body. We hope that our
sincere decision will be understood in the proper spirit by the entire church,
and we are dedicated to bringing about genuine change through contrition and
internal reform. We have decided to pursue these reforms until true change comes
to the entire Korean reformed church. In a word, we have committed to die. But
we hope that through this death, the Seoul Council, the Presbyterian Church, and
indeed the entire Korean Church will be resurrected to new life. We are seeking
God`s resurrection of the church. We believe that this is the only way for us to
live again. We are certain of the truth of resurrection that we must die to be
saved. We pray that one day God will grant true resurrection to the Korean
Church. We pray that our old habits and ways that have corrupted us will die and
that we will receive new life in Jesus Christ so that we can be born again on
this Easter Day.
